Top album: Michael Jackson's CD *Invincible*—an essential album for every fan of the King of Pop.

*Invincible* is the tenth and final studio album by singer Michael Jackson, and his sixth solo album with Epic Records; it was released on October 30, 2001.

Released shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the album did not receive strong promotion from Sony Music. Promotional efforts were halted just three months after *Invincible*'s release, and only four singles saw a partial commercial release [Note 2], exacerbating the already significant internal rift between the artist and his record label. Furthermore, only two music videos were produced, and no tour was undertaken to support the album.

The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard charts and in thirteen other countries. It was certified double platinum in the United States on December 3, 2001. Total worldwide sales exceeded six million copies—a disappointing result given the production budget; *Invincible* remains the most expensive album in music history, with production costs estimated by Sony Music at thirty million dollars.

Creation and Context
In 1998, with the promotion for the albums *HIStory* and *Blood on the Dance Floor* concluded, Michael Jackson decided to step back from the music scene to care for his two young children (Prince and Paris). Recording for *Invincible* began a year later, under pressure from Sony Music. Despite the 20 million copies of *HIStory* sold (including 4 million in the United States), the relationship between Michael Jackson and his record label deteriorated, revealing numerous disagreements regarding the direction of the artist's career. Sluggish sales in the US market compelled Michael Jackson to heed Sony's demands and prepare a new album.

To this end, he enlisted the help of Rodney Jerkins, among others—a producer who had already crafted hits for Destiny's Child, Whitney Houston, and Toni Braxton. Recording sessions began in 1999, and "You Rock My World" was one of the first tracks to be completed. Michael Jackson wrote and composed only two songs entirely on his own: "Speechless" and "The Lost Children." Unlike his previous albums, Michael Jackson was less involved in the production of *Invincible*, as he was simultaneously focusing on his children.
